The Coimbra Vegan Market is more than a market — it’s a gathering. Every first Sunday of the month, the heart of Coimbra fills with the smell of fresh vegan pastries, sizzling street food, and the buzz of people who came not just to shop but to be part of something. Local vendors, artisans, and activists come together in one space to show just how varied, delicious, and accessible vegan living can be.
Wander through and you’ll find stalls of vegan pastries and desserts, hearty street food, handmade crafts, eco-friendly products, and independent makers who’ve built their businesses around cruelty-free values. But food and shopping are only half of it. It’s also a place to talk – about animal rights, about sustainable living, and about the day-to-day reality of running a farmed animal sanctuary – with people who are genuinely curious and open to it.
That’s the part that matters most to us: every single edition of the market exists to support Riza and the animals in our care. The stalls, the vendors, the volunteers running the whole thing — it all comes back to funding food, veterinary care, and shelter for the sheep, goats, pigs, donkeys, cows, and chickens who call our sanctuary home.
Growing beyond Coimbra
What started as a single market in Coimbra has grown. We now also run the Viseu Vegan Market, bringing the same spirit — good food, honest conversation, and community — to a new city and a new crowd. Same mission, same volunteers behind it, just a different square to gather in.
Whether you’re a long-time vegan, vegan-curious, or simply someone who loves discovering local makers, you’re welcome at either market. Come for the food, stay for the people, and leave having supported a sanctuary full of animals who are counting on days like these.
